They also suck. Hard. That gap goes from 0-7/8" wide in a scant 28". The cabinet is dead-on-balls level (it’s an industry term).

So, I cut this here vampire stake. Freehand, with a table saw.

Hahahahaha I can relate. My kitchen ceiling isn’t level (but not deliberately angled). The trim above the cabinets looks ridiculous.

The only thing worse than working on old houses is heating old houses. I grew up in a 200 year old farmhouse. We had forced air and 2 woodstoves and it still wasn’t enough.

A fun tidbit: most of the downstairs st ill had the original flooring. One of my chores was to go around with a hammer a few times a week and push down all the nails that had popped up from floorboards flexing as people walked around.

We rented a Craftsman home built in the early ‘30s. The windows leaked so bad we could feel the breeze through the house. So I did the only reasonable thing to do - I covered the windows in plastic. It made a huge difference in how well the house retained heat. Unfortunately, the landlord decided to sell the house. During the first showing, the plastic was still in place, so the potential buyers decided to pass. The landlord was so pissed! He demanded that we take down the plastic. When we refused, he decided to retaliate by turning off our water over Easter weekend when we had family visiting from out of state. I was never so glad to move out of a house.

And yet, I get the distinct feeling modern constructions won’t hold up as well at the same age. Especially in Houston, it felt like a lot of these places were built with the idea they’d have a lifespan of around 30 years.

Modern houses are structurally much more sound in general, than old ones. Old ones are built with beautiful strong materials, but by a bunch of drunks who had no building code to follow. Roof, floor, and ceiling joists were often radically undersized, and door/window headers were usually non-existent.

That said, there are few things on this Earth that I hate more, than vinyl siding.

I learned the technique watching a flooring guy do his thing. My hands were well away from the blade. For good measure, I cut it on my school's SawStop.

When we bought it, I replaced all the windows, gutted the entire 2ndfloor to the studs, and had spray foam insulation put in the entire 2nd floor/attic. It made a HUGE difference! There's still zero insulation in the first floor walls though.

One day I hope to upgrade to a SawStop. I currently have a portable DeWalt unit. It works fairly well, but part of me thinks it's never a wise idea to cheap out on safety.
